Facing criticism from Israel, sportswear maker Adidas has announced it will tweak its advertising campaign to revive a running shoe originally designed for the 1972 Munich Olympics. The Israeli government was offended by the fact that supermodel Bella Hadid was chosen as the face of the campaign. Adidas has not said what changes it will make.
Bella Hadid’s father is Palestinian, and Israel has accused him of making anti-Israel statements in the past, and has accused him of anti-Semitism.
The 1972 Summer Olympics saw an attack that killed eleven Israeli athletes and officials. The attack was carried out by Palestinian terrorists.
“We are aware that there are associations between this campaign and tragic historical events – albeit unintended – and we apologise for any distress or distress this may have caused,” Adidas said in a statement. “That’s why we are reviewing the campaign. We believe in sport as a unifying force around the world and will continue our efforts to promote diversity and equality in everything we do.”
