Kerala is currently reeling from severe weather conditions, including heavy rains and winds, prompting several popular tourist destinations to close for public safety. Various parts of Kerala are also under travel restrictions. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in eight districts on Wednesday. The affected districts include Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. Additionally, a yellow alert indicating heavy rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm has been put in place in the other six districts of the state. The Central Water Commission has warned of rising water levels in rivers such as Achankovil in Pathanamthitta and Thodupuzha in Idukki, and has advised residents nearby to exercise caution.
Below are the main restrictions and closures that travelers should consider:
1) The road from Neramangalam to Munnar is closed, and the Gap road is also closed due to mudslides and heavy rains.
2) Jeep safaris at Kolukkumalai in Idukki have been suspended.
3) Ponmudi Hill Station will be closed until further notice.
4) In Kottayam, access to tourist attractions like Illikal Kalu, Ilavisapoonchira and Marmalade are off limits indefinitely. Night travel on Erattupita-Wagamon road is prohibited.
5) All DTPC centres in Kozhikode have travel restrictions.
6) Visiting all waterfalls is prohibited in Palakkad, with additional bans in Parambikulam, Attappadi and Nelliyamapathy.
7) All beaches in Kerala have restrictions, with local authorities advising against marine activities and coastal visits.
8) All the trekking routes and amusement parks in Wayanad are not operational.
9) Ranipuram in Kasaragod remains closed until further notice.
10) The eco-tourism site Mahaganithottam in Kalady, Kochi, will be closed for the next three days.
