Ethiopian Airlines has partnered with Satarem America Inc. to produce and use sustainable aviation fuel, further strengthening its commitment to environmentally friendly aviation.
Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Satarem America to collaborate on the production and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) within Ethiopia. Under the agreement, Satarem will be responsible for the local production of SAF, while Ethiopian Airlines has committed to procure SAF from Satarem. The MoU underscores Ethiopian Airlines Group’s commitment to sustainability and represents a pivotal step towards a greener, more environmentally conscious future.
Through this partnership with Satarem America, a leading sustainable energy solutions company, Ethiopian Airlines Group will integrate sustainable fuel into its operations. This initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions and align with global efforts to address climate change. Derived from renewable raw materials, sustainable fuel provides a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Commenting on this move, Mr. Mesfin Tassew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, said:“We are excited to partner with Satarem America Inc. on our journey toward a greener, more sustainable future. Adopting sustainable aviation fuel is not just a business decision; it reflects our commitment to combating climate change and investing in innovative solutions that support a sustainable industry.”

As Africa’s largest and most experienced airline, Ethiopian Airlines has consistently led the way in sustainability. The airline has taken several initiatives such as modernizing its fleet, improving flight operations, implementing tree planting projects, and launching comprehensive recycling programs to reduce waste and emissions. Incorporating sustainable fuel into its operations will further enhance these efforts, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel.
