Dubai Roads and Transport Authority’s AED 165 million project to enhance access to Mall of the Emirates, develop streets, intersections, pedestrian walkways and expand cycle paths.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a Dh165 million initiative to improve access to Mall of the Emirates, including upgrading surrounding streets and intersections. The comprehensive project aims to streamline traffic, improve pedestrian paths and expand cycle lanes.
New bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road
The most important features of this project include the construction of a 300-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the establishment of car parks across the Emirates for drivers coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali.
Improvements at Umm Suqeim Intersection
The project includes the expansion of the existing ramp at Umm Suqeim intersection, as this development will facilitate the movement of vehicles from Umm Suqeim Street to the bridge leading to the mall’s parking lots.
Upgrades around the mall
Additional improvements include:
- Developing 2.5 km of roads surrounding Mall of the Emirates.
- Developing three intersections with traffic lights.
- Development of the bus station at Mall of the Emirates Metro Station.
- Converting the street next to the Kempinski Hotel from one-way to two-way.
Less travel times
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, confirmed that this project will contribute to significantly reducing the travel time for those coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali to the Mall of the Emirates, as it will reduce the time from 10 minutes to just one minute, and will also reduce the travel time for those coming from Umm Suqeim by half from 15 minutes to 8 minutes.
Improving accessibility to shopping malls
Since its opening in 2005, Mall of the Emirates has become a major tourist attraction, attracting more than 40 million visitors annually. It houses 454 stores, 96 restaurants and cafes, and entertainment venues such as Ski Dubai and the largest VOX Cinemas in the Middle East. The mall also houses luxury hotels and is directly connected to the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station via a pedestrian bridge.
