Growth in outbound tourism and economic insights

Tunisia’s recent decision to allow visa-free entry for Iranian travelers marks an important milestone in bilateral tourism relations between the two countries. In 2018, Iran’s outbound tourism spending reached $8.695 billion, up from $632 million in 1999, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 28.87%. The GlobalData 2023 report highlighted that the most popular destinations for Iranian travelers include Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, with forecasts indicating a 20% increase in international departures from Iran in 2023.

Iran’s tourism ministry announced that 3.35 million tourists arrived in the first half of the current Iranian year, which began on March 21, a 38% increase over the previous year. However, foreign travel declined slightly, with 1,759,749 Iranians traveling abroad in the first quarter, down 6.5% from 1,882,414 in the same period last year.

Economic and tourism forecasts

The economic forecast projects a steady increase in Iran’s GDP from 2024 to 2029, with an expected increase of $112.1 billion, equivalent to a growth of 24.15%.
