With overtourism sweeping through popular tourist destinations like the Balearic Islands, those looking for quieter escapes are looking further afield. One of Europe’s most tranquil destinations is just an hour’s flight from London: Luxembourg.
Luxembourg: Europe’s Most Serene Destination
Luxembourg has been named by Riviera Travel as the quietest destination in Europe, meaning it has the fewest tourists. According to Eurostat data for 2023, Luxembourg is the least visited European country, with tourists spending 3.4 million nights there. In contrast, Spain is the most visited country, with tourists spending 484.9 million nights there.
Nestled between Belgium, France and Germany, Luxembourg is one of Europe’s richest countries and the world’s only Grand Duchy. This tiny country is ten times smaller than its neighbor Belgium and can be easily reached on foot. Plus, trains and buses are completely free.

Luxembourg offers plenty to explore, from beautiful nature hikes with fern forests and waterfalls in the north to fascinating museums and medieval fortifications that can be visited year-round.
Bock Castle is a must-see for any tourist interested in Luxembourg’s rich history. This network of rock tunnels and caves was first dug into the cliffsides by the Spanish in 1644, expanded by French engineer Vauban in the 1680s, and then again by the Austrians in the mid-18th century. It has been used for everything from World War II bunkers to bakeries, and is a great day out for those who want to explore.
For a more relaxing experience, visit the Moselle Valley wine region in southeastern Luxembourg. Its lush vineyards and local wines provide the perfect setting for a summer afternoon.
In the evening, take a stroll through Luxembourg’s Rives de Clausen district. Once a 12th-century brewery, this area has been renovated into an eclectic entertainment district with modern bars and restaurants offering something for everyone.
