Economic Overview and Tourism Trends

As of late 2023, Zimbabwe’s GDP was estimated at $59 billion based on purchasing power parity (PPP). However, World Economics’ broader estimate suggests a significant increase, with Zimbabwe’s GDP potentially reaching $113 billion—91% larger than official figures. This discrepancy highlights the importance of understanding both formal and informal economic contributions.

Outbound tourism from Zimbabwe has shown dynamic trends over recent years. In 2020, South Africa and Botswana were the top destinations for Zimbabwean travelers, representing 57% and 16% of departures respectively. Other popular destinations included Zambia, Mozambique, and Malawi. The total value of outbound tourism was $135 million in 2020, a decline from $228 million in 2011. However, forecasts indicate a promising rebound, with international departures expected to grow by 92% in 2023. By 2024, outbound travel is projected to return to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 4.6 million trips.
