Australia has issued a travel warning for its citizens due to the possibility of rioting in the UK. Here’s what other countries are advising their travellers.
Australia
The official travel advice for Australians visiting the UK states: “Avoid areas where protests are taking place due to the potential for unrest and violence. Monitor media for information and updates. Follow the instructions of local authorities.” While Canberra is not urging Australians to leave the UK immediately, it is highlighting the risks of terrorism, which may be motivated by Islamist extremism, far-right ideology or the status of Northern Ireland.
Canada
Canada advises its citizens to exercise extreme caution due to the threat of terrorism. Certain areas of central London, such as Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Leicester Square, are known for their high crime rates. Canadians are advised to avoid showing signs of wealth and to be wary of narrow, busy streets.
Ireland
The Irish government reassures its citizens that they do not need any vaccinations to travel to Great Britain.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s safe travel advice highlights the UK’s long history of terrorist attacks, including threats from groups adhering to violent extremist ideologies and terrorism linked to Northern Ireland. Petty crime such as bag and mobile phone snatching, pickpocketing and burglary are common, particularly in urban centres and on public transport.
United State
The U.S. Embassy in London offers detailed advice for American visitors, including information on visiting Parliament and navigating U.K. laws. The U.S. State Department’s travel advisory warns that the U.K. has strict gun control laws and that importing firearms is complicated. Americans are also warned to beware of narrow and uneven pavements, and the inaccessibility of many London Underground stations and the U.K.’s national rail system. In addition, there is a warning about scammers posing as undercover police officers who fine tourists for bogus crimes.
Unusual aspects of life in Britain
Foreign travel warnings often highlight unique aspects of life in the UK that may surprise residents, from the risks of petty crime in tourist areas to the challenges of navigating local transport.
