Gateshead’s Metrocentre shopping destination is planning to spend £6m on an upgrade to revitalise an area in and around the Green Mall entrance.
Metrocentre Partnership said it had submitted a local planning application with the proposed scheme to create new key units, and enhance the public realm and landscape, including enhanced biodiversity and landscaping, around one of the main gateways to the shopping centre.
Designed by Leslie Jones Architecture, the proposed gateway will also be framed by new outward-facing restaurant spaces, “adding greater diversity to the day-to-night offerings at the centre.”
The creation of over 18,000 sq ft of south-facing dining space across three new units will provide a new food and drink destination, adjacent to the Marks & Spencer store.
She noted that “the improvements will provide a more attractive and accessible entrance for visitors, as well as an opportunity to spend time outside during good weather.”
“Redefining the entrance to Green Mall is the natural next step in Metrocentre’s evolution following major investments in other shopping centres over the past four years,” said Ben Cox, Director of Sovereign Centros from CBRE, the asset managers of Metrocentre.
“This project will enhance the Metrocentre economy from day to night by bringing a fresh perspective to our food and beverage offerings, and creating a much better sense of arrival at Green Mall. We are in early discussions with some high quality operators and look forward to updating more in due course.”
“The investment in the redevelopment… is a crucial step in our ongoing commitment to driving the revitalisation of Metro Centre,” added Martin Healy, Chairman of Metro Centre. “This investment will not only enhance the visitor experience… but will also support the long-term growth and prosperity of the area.”
