From Lady Gaga’s Batman-inspired mask to Julianne Moore’s sparkling gold Oscar-like gown, the stars at the Venice Film Festival gave their audiences red carpet moments worthy of the world’s oldest film festival.
The Venice Film Festival, which ends on Saturday, was packed with Hollywood celebrities this year, from Angelina Jolie to George Clooney, and walking the red carpet was one of the most anticipated moments of the event.
Clooney and co-star Brad Pitt turned the catwalk into their own personal playground on Sunday night at the world premiere of “Wolfs,” walking the red carpet, acting eager, over-pretending and clearly having fun.
For more than half an hour — a long time on the red carpet — the couple posed for photographers, taking selfies or signing photos for fans, with Clooney wearing a classic tuxedo and Pitt in a more modern version with a black shirt and wide-leg pants.
At one point, Clooney and Pitt were sitting among a phalanx of photographers, and Clooney was heard saying to Pitt, “You should sit on one side, and I’ll sit on the other side.”
Not to be left behind, Lady Gaga opted for the ultimate in classic black drama on Wednesday for the premiere of her new film, “Joker: Foley a Deux,” wearing a stunning black mask reminiscent of Batman’s pointed ears covered in a strip of Venetian lace.
A black velvet dress by Christian Dior with a low neckline and a luxurious taffeta skirt completed the look.
But it wasn’t all doom and gloom this year, with many stars opting to wear bright colours.
For his red carpet appearance, Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar wore a pink double-breasted suit decorated with a white feather at the collar.
While Jenni Ortega’s backless crimson Dior gown might have been risky, the dress left a lot of her skin exposed, minimizing the chance of her blending in with the surroundings, thanks to the puffy, heart-shaped fabric at the chest.
Yellow was a favorite color for Amal Clooney, George Clooney’s wife, while Nicole Kidman stepped out for the premiere of her film “Baby Girl” in a black dress with pink and beige shorts by Schiaparelli with fringe that shimmered as she moved.
As befits a star who plays the greatest opera star of the 20th century, Maria Callas, in “Maria,” Jolie opted for a charming, vintage look, wearing a warm beige dress by Tamara Ralph, which she paired with a faux fur scarf.
But as the awards were handed out on Saturday night at the close of the 10-day festival, it may have been Julianne Moore who set the right tone.
On the red carpet for Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door,” in which she co-stars with Tilda Swinton, Moore wore a shimmering gold Bottega Veneta gown covered in sequins, a look that hinted at what every star covets — an Oscar.
