Digital retail giant Amazon has given thousands of workers in the UK a pay rise of almost 10%.
The increase will take minimum rates up by 9.8% and comes after the online retailer maintained its non-union status in Britain, defeating a GMB bid for wage negotiation rights.
Amazon said the increase would raise minimum wage rates to between £13.50 and £14.50 per hour, depending on location. Employees with at least three years’ service will receive a minimum of £13.75 to £14.75 per hour.
The pay increase will apply from September 29, including to workers at the company’s product distribution centres in the UK.
The company said it had invested £550m in increasing staff pay since 2022, adding that employees had received benefits such as subsidised meals and discounts.
“That’s why we’re proud to announce an increase in the minimum starting wage for all frontline staff to the equivalent of over £28,000 per annum and continue to offer industry-leading benefits from day one,” a company spokesperson said.
Amazon has a global policy of not cooperating with labor unions, and says it prefers to have a direct relationship with employees.
