Alstom, a leading provider of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has delivered the railway signalling systems for the newly opened extension of the Porto Metro Yellow Line in Porto. The extension is equipped with the same advanced signalling system already in use across the network, featuring a sophisticated interlocking system for real-time vehicle monitoring. The engineering, installation and commissioning of this system was managed at Alstom’s facilities in Maia, Porto.
The yellow railway line runs from Santo Ovidio to Vila d’Este in southern Porto, adding three new stations, including an underground station. The 3.1-kilometre line spans a 500-metre viaduct and a 1-kilometre tunnel.
“Alstom and Metro do Porto maintain a close and long-standing partnership, aiming to improve mobility and passenger comfort in the city of Porto. From our engineering facilities in Maia, we develop and maintain signalling projects and digital mobility technologies for the Portuguese and international markets, and the opening of the extension of the Yellow Line is further evidence of our commitment to promoting sustainable mobility in Portugal.” David Torres, Managing Director of Alstom Portugal.
The Porto Metro, Porto’s light rail system, is approximately 78 kilometres long with six lines, serving approximately 70 million passengers annually. Alstom has supplied 102 trains and Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems for both tracks and on-board units across the entire network.
With more than 30 years of experience in the passenger transport market, Alstom is a world leader in urban signalling systems, having equipped more than 190 metro lines in more than 32 countries.
In Portugal, Alstom has been present for more than three decades. Currently, two out of every three trains in the country are manufactured by Alstom or incorporate Alstom technology, including high-speed, regional, metro and electric trains. Alstom’s ATP system operates more than 1,500 kilometers of the Portuguese railway network and has more than 500 units on board. For urban mobility, Alstom supplied the signaling system for the Metro do Porto and manufactured the first 102 trains currently operating on this network. In addition, Alstom provides the ATP system for the 18 new trains recently acquired by Metro do Porto.
