Consumer goods manufacturer Beiersdorf is investing more than €200 million in a new logistics center in Leipzig. The DAX-listed company, based in Hamburg, announced at a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony that the project is scheduled to be completed and operational in 2027. The state-of-the-art logistics center is expected to create a total of around 450 new jobs. Beiersdorf is known for its brands Nivea and Labello, among others.
Second major project in a short period of time.
Last September, the company opened a new production center north of Leipzig at a cost of around €300 million. According to Beiersdorf, the two major projects represent a “clear commitment to Germany as a business location.” Together, they represent “the largest investment the company has ever made in a single location.”
The new logistics centre on the 12.5-hectare site will serve as a central hub for Central Europe in the future. “Leipzig is ideally located for our supply chain network and connecting our customers in Central Europe,” says Christian Hansch, Head of Germany.
Leipzig’s future as a logistics hub
Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung (SPD) welcomed the commitment to the Leipzig site. “Beiersdorf is writing another chapter in its success story at the Leipzig site: the starting point for a modern, climate-neutral logistics centre that will create several hundred new jobs,” he said.
Beiersdorf says it wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2025 compared to 2018 – and by 50% by 2032. Product transformation is an important cornerstone of the reduction. The cosmetics manufacturer wants to achieve its goal of net zero emissions by 2045. Photovoltaic modules, green roofs and facades will also contribute to this goal.
