Kenzo has partnered with the French Judo team in preparation for their competitions in Paris this summer. As part of the partnership, technical director Nigo has designed a special kit inspired by the Japanese origins of the sport.
It is worth noting that the team will wear the same kimono-inspired suit that was revealed during the brand’s fall/winter 2023 fashion show. French athletes are set to wear Kenzo’s kimono suit at several formal events this summer.
Redesigned for the French Judo team, the Nejo Kimono reflects the traditional Japanese roots that inspired his creative vision for the Kenzo brand. This elegant ceremonial garment represents an “East meets West” aesthetic, blending traditional Japanese design with contemporary Western fashion.
The kimono, a garment with a rich history dating back to the 8th century in Japan, reached its peak during the Edo period, a period of economic growth, national stability, and flourishing of the arts. Today, it is still worn during important events in Japan as a reminder of the country’s core culture.
In the world of judo, the kimono evolved to improve performance, with changes in length, size and thickness of fabric to improve freedom of movement and grip. This evolution embodies discipline, respect and commitment – values that resonate with Kenzo.
