The Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) has launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging airlines to expand their services and increase flight frequencies to and from Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), enhancing its position as a global aviation hub.
Following the completion of the guaranteed landing fee discount scheme for early booking earlier this year, AAHK presented the Airport Network Development Programme (the Programme) in June 2024 after consultation with representatives of domestic and international airlines. The Programme consists of two main plans: the New Route Plan and the Strategic Development Plan.
Under the new route scheme, airlines operating new flights connecting Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport on a sustainable basis will be eligible for financial incentives over a period of two years. This opportunity extends to airlines currently operating at Hong Kong International Airport as well as new entrants, with applications being accepted from 1 June 2024 to 31 December 2027.
The strategic development plan encourages airlines to align their route expansions with AAHK’s strategic objectives. Airlines that launch new routes or increase frequencies to regions or countries targeted by AAHK will receive financial incentives over a three-year period. In addition, airlines that use HKIA Dongguan Logistics Park (HKIALP) for air cargo operations can qualify for incentives on additional cargo flights, provided that all cargo is accepted at HKIALP in Dongguan.
Vivian Cheung, Acting CEO of AAHK, said:“Airline connectivity is crucial for an international aviation hub like Hong Kong International Airport. While we are confident in the long-term development of Hong Kong International Airport, the new programme encourages domestic and foreign airlines to advance their launch of new routes and/or increase the frequency of flights connecting with Hong Kong International Airport. The programme has already received positive feedback from airlines since its launch last month. AAHK will continue to engage with domestic and foreign airlines based at Hong Kong International Airport and engage with other airlines regarding the programme.
In addition, AAHK has provided sponsorship to airlines for their promotional activities associated with the launch of new routes at Hong Kong International Airport.
