Today, Soraya Martínez-Verada, Minister of Tourism and Minister responsible for the Canadian Economic Development Agency for Quebec, announced the $800 million Canada Greener Homes Program on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The program is designed to help low- and moderate-income Canadians, including renters, upgrade their homes to reduce energy costs and pollution. The Canada Greener Homes Program will replace the Canada Greener Homes Grant and provide more comprehensive support for retrofit installations at no cost to participating households.
The programme is based on a ‘direct installation’ model, where third parties manage and deliver the retrofit work, offering up to four times the support compared to the previous grant programme. Experienced energy efficiency experts will identify recommended retrofit works, ensuring that every participant gets the upgrades they need to make their homes more comfortable and affordable.
The Canada Greener Homes Program (CGHAP) expands on the achievements of the Canada Greener Homes Grant (CGHG), which has already supported 240,000 homeowners to install heat pumps, energy-efficient windows, doors and insulation. With an average grant of $4,400 per household, these upgrades have resulted in significant savings, with each household cutting nearly $400 per year off their energy bills and reducing emissions by 1.18 tonnes of CO2.
Looking ahead, CGHG will continue to help hundreds of thousands of participants complete retrofit projects. These initiatives aim to further reduce energy consumption and emissions, making homes across Canada more sustainable and cost-effective.
The Government of Canada has launched the Canada Green Building Strategy, with the aim of improving energy efficiency, reducing energy bills, and supporting jobs nationwide.
